South Sudan
As South Sudan opens a new chapter after a two year political conflict, a fashion and arts show has been held in the capital to promote peace.
The event was organised by the foundation of William Nyuon and the House of Bany to showcase the country’s diverse culture as well as offer hope, dignity and a better future for women and families in South Sudan.
Creative Director, Nyagoa William Nyuon told AFP, “We have so much to give even for me being away from the country, this is a learning process. Everyday I learn something from the Mudari, from the Nuer, from the Shuiluk and I just feel like for our generation, we need to preserve this culture for our kids’ generation.
The models adorned beautiful pieces of jewelry over their shoulders, exemplifying the taste of South Sudanese women.
The event brought together various communities, who not long ago were sharply divided along tribal lines at the height of the conflict, to celebrate the country’s rich culture and art.
“This is very interesting because it shows us all the different cultures of South Sudan in terms of clothes, cuisine … and I hope that this will continue because it gives an image of our country to the world. We always want to encourage our people to show our culture to the world because the arts and culture are the only things that can move the country forward,” said an attendee.
The two-year conflict in the young nation resulted in the deaths of thousands and displacement of more than 2 million people.
According to the UN, the conflict also resulted in an economic decline and has left more than half of the South Sudanese population in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
